High speed vehicle pursuits have put Law Enforcement officers and the general public in danger since the advent of the automobile. AB Defense Systems, LLC., has developed and patented a system to temporarily disable a vehicle by discharging a gas into the engine compartment of the suspect vehicle. The concept is simple in nature, any engine that utilizes a fuel/oxygen mixture operates on the same basic principals as fire, remove any of the legs of the fire tetrahedron and the combustion stops. By introducing an agent that works be displacing the oxygen and chemically interrupts the chemical chain reaction of fire into the intake of an engine, it interferes with the combustion chemical reaction. To date, both internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines have been tested, with kill times of approximately 2-3 seconds each. No turbine engines have been tested, but we do not anticipate any problems with those, since our process disrupts the combustion process. Once the gas flow ceases, the restart time for gasoline engines is approximately 15 seconds for gasoline engines, and 30 seconds for diesel engines. Additional blasts of gas will keep the vehicle disabled longer.
The Vehicle Disabling system can either be a fixed system mounted in a police car, or it can be man portable.
